There is no evidence of the effectiveness of phonophoresis with Biofreeze or any other menthol-based topical analgesic. Since Biofreeze Professional is electrically neutral, it should not be used for iontophoresis. We do not recommend using Biofreeze as a 100% coupling agent during ultrasound since it may diminish the transmission of sound waves or damage the sound head crystals. Some studies have shown that mixing Biofreeze with ultrasound coupling gel at ratios between 3:1 (Rigby et al. 2014), and 1:1 (Myrer et al. 2001) of ultrasound gel to Biofreeze produce similar heating of the tissue as 100% ultrasound gel. These studies found no statistical difference in tissue heating ("87% of pure ultrasound gel) during 10 minutes of ultrasound at 1.0 w/cm2 at 3 MHz. However, there is no evidence of the clinical benefit or harm associated with performing ultrasound treatments with Biofreeze mixtures.

The alcohol in Spray Biofreeze Professional is denatured alcohol. The spray is the only one that uses ethanol instead of isopropanol. When ethanol is used in a personal care product, it must be denatured with something (there are many approved denaturants) to not drink personal care products. So little of the alcohol in the spray penetrates the skin before it evaporates into the air. It is unlikely that the alcohol applied during Biofreeze Professional Spray will show up in a drug test.
What can be done when the Biofreeze Professional Spray can does not seem to be spraying the product?
To start, make sure that the Biofreeze Professional Spray is always facing away from you and away from your face to be sure it doesn't spray in your direction when you break the seal. If you look down onto the nozzle you press, directly on the opposite side of the sprayer is a tiny "dot". If you push with a bit of extra force, that seal will break and make spraying possible. If pressing down on the nozzle is difficult for you, simply turn the product upside down on a table (remember to make sure the sprayer is facing away from you and away from your face), and press the container firmly into the table to break the seal.
Can an area be covered after the application of Biofreeze Professional?
